After entering the twenty-first century, cross-field study of a wide range of different disciplines, interplay between theory and experiment and large-scale scientific computing have become the mainstreams of scientific research. Interdisciplinary research exists in many areas of physics at different levels, such as elementary particles, nuclear structure, atomic and molecular structure, condensed matter, new materials designing and synthesis, biological macromolecules, neural networks, complex systems, large-scale structure of the universe and its evolution, etc. Together with the use of large scientific facilities and large-scale scientific computing, interdisciplinary research has resulted in new scientific discoveries and technological revolution at both microscopic and macroscopic levels.The Division of Theoretical and Interdisciplinary Research (DTIR) at the Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics aims at important scientific problems by promoting interdisciplinary research and collaboration between theory and experiment, with the aid of large-scale scientific computing and large scientific facilities.Targeting at cutting-edge scientific problems and national strategic needs, combined with the Institute 's disciplinary character, DTIR will focus on the following research topics during the periods of the national Twelfth Five Year Plan and the Innovation 2020 Project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences: atomic and molecular structure and their precision spectra, determination of the fundamental physical constants, and exploration of new physics beyond the standard model of particle physics; applications of quantum information in black hole physics and cryptography; physics of cold atom and molecule and its application in revealing the mechanisms of high-temperature superconductivity and chemical reaction; quantum many-body mechanism for generalized superfluid systems; applications of atomic, molecular and optical physics in testing the equivalence principle of general relativity, in studying dark matter, dark energy and quantum gravity, and in detecting gravitational wave; development of computational methods for complex molecular systems and their applications in material science and life science; quantitative study of biological dynamic systems; and mathematical and physical principles of nuclear magnetic imaging. Through recruiting outstanding young talents around the world, DTIR will continue to explore new research directions. We also endeavor to make DTIR an international research base and a platform for academic exchange.
